As of this writing, my partner and I have seen 5 out of 8 Metro Manila Film Festival entries. We have enjoyed every single one so far. I don’t know if we’ll still have the time to catch the rest of the entries at the cinema before work gets hectic again. I don’t know if I still have the budget either (even Direk Jun Robles Lana knows MMFF ticket prices have become quite expensive)!

In any case, the next few issues of this newsletter will feature those entries we have seen. For those of you who have seen the films, I would love to know your thoughts as well.

I’mPerfect, a landmark film portraying what love and coming of age look like for people with Down syndrome

I’mPerfect made history after winning Best Picture and Best Ensemble at the 51st edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival. Written and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, the film follows Jiro and Jessica, both people with Down syndrome (DS), as they navigate life, love, and relationships. Jiro is a 29-year old son to doctor parents. He has been homeschooled his whole life before getting enrolled in a special needs program. There he meets his classmate Jessica who is 28 years old and works as a waitress at a cafe.

The film was 16 years in the making. Although the script was started in 2014, the idea was first conceptualized in 2009 when Bernardo worked as a director for a fashion show featuring people with DS. In the MMFF 2025 Special of Endslate, she recounted that experience. “Nagulat ako kasi umorder siya [a person with DS] ng pizza. Alam niya kung ano yung ayaw niya. Na-schock ako. It was an eye-opener for me.” She also shared that she has a relative with a mental disability which piqued her curiosity. “I just don’t get it — paano ‘to nagwowork, itong mundo na ito. I just thought it was the end of the line, so nacurious ako.” She admitted that she didn’t initially know much about DS and had doubts herself. “Sa totoo lang, I have to admit na hindi po ako noon naniniwala kung kaya nila.” Still, the experience left her inspired to learn more about the condition and create a story.

But producers were more hesitant and doubtful of the film’s appeal. An initial teaser was released in 2017 and though some producers liked the heartwarming message, no one committed to the project. Sylvia Sanchez, who has a family member with DS, saw the value of telling the story and the film’s potential. She served as the film’s Executive Producer and played Jessica’s mother, Norma.

It’s evident the film had much love and respect for people with DS. Bernardo wasn’t afraid to show reality and her characters’ (the leads and the family and friends surrounding them) imperfections. More importantly, she trusted her cast’s ability to deliver remarkable performances.

The result is a landmark film. It is the first MMFF entry featuring people with DS as leads and other key characters. Female lead Krystel Go also won Best Actress. The Philippine Star lauded the film’s victory, stating it is “expected to cause ripples beyond the Philippines offering a new benchmark for global cinema. By casting neurodivergent actors to tell their own stories—rather than relying on neurotypical actors to mimic them—the film challenges international standards of authenticity and representation.” An impressive feat, especially considering Bernardo did not even expect their film to be selected for MMFF in the first place due to “commercial viability.”

I personally loved the coming-of-age theme. Although the leads were nearly 30, their story is of self-discovery, transitioning to adulthood/becoming more independent, and falling in love for the first time. Mainstream Philippine cinema often gets a bad rap for excessively focusing on typical love stories. This is a love story, but it is far from typical. It portrays love between people who are often thought of as lesser and incapable of loving. But what I loved most about the film was it let me go through the same journey Bernardo and anyone with little to no knowledge of DS had. I also know very little about DS. I also had questions about the abilities of people with DS, but I’mPerfect’s dignified portrayal of its characters proved that “yes, they can.”

Ultimately, Bernardo was mindful about inclusivity. At the same time, she was careful not to exploit the very people she advocates for. The desire to give people with DS someone to look up to, while striking the right balance, I think is the heart of the film.

Bernardo said it best. “They are not wallflowers. Hindi sila pang-display. They are not symbols. They are humans. They can be angry and they can experience love. They can fall in love and be independent.”

It’s been a while since my last post. November was a busy period for us. We moved residences which always involves a lot more time and effort than you think. I also ran my third marathon, culminating a 5-month training block. Work was also hectic because everyone was chasing deadlines and trying to wrap up projects/tasks ahead of the Christmas season limbo.

To everyone who sent a message/left a comment asking when I’d post again, thank you for the concern and the support! I’m plugging back in and hope to be more active again. I also have new ideas I’d like to try out in 2026, so stay tuned.

I made a Letterboxd list containing the films referenced in Jessica Zafra’s Twisted Flicks so you don’t have to

A couple of weeks ago, I started re-reading Jessica Zafra’s Twisted Flicks. I bought the book back in 2011, shortly after learning about Jessica Zafra from an older cousin who had some of her Twisted books. Since then, I’ve been a fan of her work. I have some of her books but am on a quest to complete the entire collection.

Since I’ve been logging more films on Letterboxd recently, I thought it would be a good idea to pick up Twisted Flicks again and make a Letterboxd list of the films reviewed or referenced in the book.

There were some omissions though. Like Penelope Cruz where she was “good in that [Pedro] Almodovar movie,” “Pam Grier’s blaxploitation films,” “recent Schwarzeneggers,” William Wyler’s Forties films and “Mother” Lily Monteverde’s/Golden Harvest Films’ “pito-pito movies.” You’ll notice these are essentially categories and not specific films. I could have added them to the list but I feel like it would unnecessarily bloat up the selection, when they were really just mentioned in passing. Still, the entire resulting list contains 260+ films. Including the omissions, it would be north of 300!

Growing up and to this day, I consider Jessica Zafra as an influence and a role model. I wanted to be like her and do all the awesome things she does. From writing about interesting things, traveling extensively and having legendary side quests most people would be happy to have as their mission (e.g. briefly managing the Eraserheads). Re-reading Twisted Flicks is just another reminder. I started religiously tracking the films I watch on Letterboxd sometime in 2024. Since then, I’ve logged ~150 films. Over a few years, Ms. Zafra watched 300+ films which she ended up mentioning in the book. There were probably more that didn’t make the cut and more that she didn’t even write about.

Number one, that’s crazy productivity. Watching that many films and still finding the time to do her work. But then again, it is part of her job. Number two, she is a major cinephile! Ms. Zafra, if you are reading this, we need you on Letterboxd. I’ll be your first follower!

Her knowledge of cinema was on full display here. She could point out Bomba films referencing Vertigo or Chinatown. She’s not afraid to claim Joey Gosiengfiao got something right which Guy Ritchie struggled with. You could tell she loves cinema, but it’s also apparent she’s a champion of Filipino cinema particularly. Even while watching international films, she “keeps her eyes peeled for the Pinoy” because “there’s always a Pinoy.” In an interview with film director Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, she asked what the audience can do to improve local movies. In one of the articles, she concluded, “Mabuhay ang Pelikulang Pilipino.”

Re-reading the book, I was reminded what made me a fan of hers in the first place. In typical Jessica Zafra fashion, her writeups are accessible, highly-engaging and humorous. I particularly loved reading her reviews for not-so-good films. (For a more scientific classification of films, refer to her notes on page 101 where she differentiated between good trash, plain trash, movies-so-bad-it’s-good, movies-taking-itself-too-seriously-it-becomes-bad, campy movies and “successful” movies.) Her roasts are so good it made me think that they were probably more entertaining than the very film she reviewed. But oddly, those roasts made me want to see the bad films just so that I could appreciate what she wrote more (instead of the other way around).

Since it’s the holiday season, I wonder how she finds this year’s MMFF entries. Again, Ms. Zafra, please create a Letterboxd account!

Earlier this year, Jy and I watched Tanghalang Pilipino’s stage adaptation of Kisapmata (with Virgilio Almario in attendance so we knew we were in for a great show). During the talkback session, Director Guelan Varela-Luarca was asked why he chose to adapt the film. He shared that he considers Kisapmata a great masterpiece and masterpiece adaptations do not need any justification. He said that Mike De Leon’s works should be adapted just like the works of Shakespeare, Rizal and Balagtas. I remember feeling disturbed and impressed by what we saw so I agreed with that statement.

But prior to watching the stage adaptation, the film has been on my watchlist for a while. I’ve read the Nick Joaquin reportage used as the basis for the film, “The House on Zapote Street,” so it felt like it was only a matter of time. A few weeks ago, Jy and I finally watched it. It’s not surprising that it’s considered one of the greatest Filipino films. If you haven’t seen it, it’s currently available in full on YouTube.

[🎬Film] Kisapmata: A film about a father’s incestuous and controlling relation with his daughter that became an allegory of the Marcos regime

Kisapmata (translation: Blink of an Eye) is a 1981 psychological horror/thriller film directed by Mike de Leon, starring Vic Silayan, Charo Santos, Jay Ilagan, and Charito Solis. A young woman gets married but her domineering father refuses to let her and her new husband out of his control.

The film received much critical acclaim, winning 10 awards including Best Picture at the 7th Metro Manila Film Festival. It is also widely considered to be one of the greatest Filipino films.

The plot was inspired by Nick Joaquin’s “The House on Zapote Street.” The crime reportage chronicles the highly-publicized murder-suicide committed by retired cop, Pablo Cabading. Cabading shot his daughter and his son-in-law before shooting himself. Cabading’s wife Asuncion survived the incident.

Although the real crime happened on January 18, 1961, four years before Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was elected, the film has been interpreted as an allegory of the Martial Law dictatorship.

In his 2022 memoir Last Look Back, Mike de Leon wrote, “Kisapmata explores the concept of strongman rule as exemplified by the character of Dadong, ang Tatang, the psychotic padre de familia, rendered monstrous by the unforgettable performance of Vic Silayan. The father has incestuous relations with his daughter—the ultimate corruption. That the film was interpreted as an allegory of the regime of Ferdinand Marcos was no coincidence, though the crime happened in 1961. Nevertheless, many elements in this allegory were present in the original story. The policeman was an Ilocano, and so was Marcos. He ruled with an iron fist and subjected his family to unmitigated terror, just as Marcos did to the country.”

I really admire Exploding Galaxies’ mission. Any publishing house reintroducing Philippine literature’s “lost classics” to a newer and wider audience automatically gets my support. I have been meaning to get my first Exploding Galaxies title for a while. Now, I have two! As a big Doreen Fernandez fan, getting the pair was a no-brainer.

[🎶Music] Mula sa Himig ni Pepe Smith: A song written in a women’s restroom arguably started Pinoy rock music

“Himig Natin” is a 1973 hit single by the powerhouse group Juan de la Cruz Band composed of Pepe Smith, Wally Gonzalez and Mike Hanopol. Released as part of their album of the same name, the song is often credited as the spark that started Pinoy rock.

Its legacy and influence is even more impressive considering its quite spontaneous origin.

Pepe Smith: “I was in Japan [when I wrote Himig Natin], I was in Tokyo, 1972. I was lucky enough, I was strumming the guitar one day, I chanced on the chords, then I said, “Hey, that’s a cool chord.” Then I kept on doing the chords. Then I had to come back here [Philippines]. I met up with Wally, and we did one of the first concerts we had here in Manila. It was even titled, “Ang Himig Natin The Concert,” down at the observatory, yung Luneta? So I was [dashed] on acid, and I was looking for a place to write that song. I had to come up with the lyrics because I didn’t have any lyrics yet. So I went around [but] I couldn’t find a decent place to write the lyrics, so I went to the men’s room. Walking out, I noticed the next door was the ladies room, and it was closed. There were nails and some planks, and so we were just pushing it and it opened. We went in there, a friend of mine had a camera and he was taking photos. And then I just wrote those lyrics. Then exactly after about 30 minutes, somebody was yelling, “Joey! Where are you? You’re about to go in 10-15 minutes.” So it was a good thing I wrote the lyrics on Marlboro packs. So I wrote it down there and just put it in front of my microphone. So we sang it the whole night and everybody liked that song.”

The song also has an underrated guitar solo played by Gonzalez, unfortunately often cut from the radio edit during its time. JV Ordonez, writing for Esquire Philippines, described it as “haunting and eerie.” It “keeps a steady and smooth journey up and down the scales instead of mind-numbing shredding. The soulful symphony of hammer-ons and pull-offs of the lead guitar accentuates Pepe Smith’s raw vocals, sucking you into a call to belongingness from a bygone era.”

Last weekend, I watched Quezon, the epic conclusion to the Bayaniverse trilogy — twice. The first time in support of my college org Alay Ni Ignacio’s block screening. The second with Jy who really wanted to see the movie but had a conflict during the event. I’m not complaining because it’s a well-made film and I think is even better with multiple viewings. I highly recommend it, even if you see it just once.

[🎬Film] “Ang pagkabayani, it’s all about perception:” How Quezon brought the Bayaniverse thesis full circle

With memorable performances from the cast, compelling storytelling, and masterful direction, Quezon (2025) deserves to stand and be praised on its own. Still it’s best viewed as the final installment to the Bayaniverse trilogy. In this lens, we really see Jerrold Tarog’s thesis throughout the series: “Ang pagkabayani, it’s all about perception.”

Heneral Luna (2015) showed a hero with unrivaled passion and patriotism. John Arcilla’s Luna is a hero people wanted to rally behind and emulate. He was branded as a leader who could have saved the Philippines, if not for the infighting between the revolutionaries. Yes, he was a flawed character, but you wanted to root for him. Never mind that he never won a battle – his profound love of country made up for it. The timing of the film also couldn’t be more perfect — it was released during an intense rise in populism. The film arguably contributed to Rodrigo Duterte winning the 2016 presidential elections, but that’s another story.

Goyo: The Boy General (2018) was more subdued. There was no way to replicate Luna’s fiery personality and Arcilla’s performance as a cussing, temperamental general, so it was only natural to take another approach. Paulo Avelino gave life to the young, inexperienced boy general. In history classes, Goyo was often described as a martyr who died for his beloved country. The film portrayed his conflict – was he really loyal to his country or only to Aguinaldo? Was his sacrifice heroism or blind servitude?

Quezon depicted a trapo’s rise to power. Jericho Rosales’ Quezon showed ability to pull all the tricks in the book: propaganda, lying, self-serving alliances, politicking, patronage politics. He wasn’t the first to do them (and we know from our daily experiences now that he’s not the last), but he no doubt mastered them. Describing him as a chameleon was an understatement. Always performing and projecting what the other side wants him to be.

More importantly, Quezon brought the trilogy’s thesis full circle. The film, like the two before it, argues that heroism is not black and white. “Ang pagkabayani, it’s all about perception.”

The film within a film device effectively blurred the lines between reality and fiction. The switching between different Quezons (the old version, the young version, the fictionalized young version), the nonlinear storytelling and changing perspectives, further served to confuse the audience about objective history and revisionist recollection.

But the film’s biggest and most-rewarding bet is making Joven Hernando (the audience surrogate) an active participant to the story. By showing that he can be swayed by narratives, blinded by his own biases, be bought, but ultimately speak truth to power, the challenge is flipped back to the viewer. How should we view heroes? When we know that they “get their hands dirty” with politics; they forge convenient alliances; they stage publicity stunts; they do everything not for the greater good, but to push their own ambitions. How should we question our leaders and speak truth to power when we can also benefit from them if only we played our cards right?

Looking at the trilogy as a whole, it is clear that our heroes, despite their contributions to the nation, are flawed individuals. Despite their larger-than-life personas, they are just people too. Like us. The whole time we were focused on the titular characters, on supposed saviors we have preconceived perceptions on. But this conclusion just reminded us we ought to look at ourselves and our relationship with these heroes too.

2. Picture with Mon Confiado, the unsung hero of the trilogy. I still wish he had his own movie. It’s always a joy to watch his performances. (I didn’t get to take a pic with Benjamin Alves. Would have been nice to congratulate both of them.)

   

3. Watched the movie again with Jy on Sunday. They say no man watches the same film twice, for he is not the same man and it’s not the same film. It’s actually the same film — especially if you just watched it the day before — but the first watch doesn’t count anyway if your girlfriend wants to watch it with you regardless.

I have received a lot of requests/suggestions to feature old Pinoy TV commercials. I appreciate those because I like it when people engage with our posts and because I myself like iconic TV ads. I think they simply have their own appeal. Before skippable ads, programmatic advertising, advanced ad analytics, TV commercials had to catch your attention and be memorable. Brands wanted you to buy their products at the end of the day, but making TVCs was both an art and a science.

[Pop Culture] Throwback to a Coke commercial that went viral before that term even applied to popular trends

In the early 2000s, Coke Philippines released a commercial that quickly gained popularity. It featured two young women playing a game of synchronized hand movements while reciting an upbeat chant. As the chant progresses, the pace gets increasingly faster. The first to finish it without making a mistake “wins” the bottle of Coke!

It was an instant hit. Everyone knew about it. Kids and teens loved it, playing their own versions. It went viral, before that term even applied to trends in social media. If you want to be cheeky about it, you might even say “Ito Ang Beat” walked so Anna Kendrick’s “Cups” could run!

More than 20 years since its release, millennials and above still remember it. It’s a good reminder of a time when TV commercials had to entertain. Back when commercials weren’t skippable but advertisers still had to be creative lest audiences switch the channel.

Hello fellow Filipiniana fans,

Last night’s social media meme post is probably my most niche post to date, but it’s for everyone who likes Pete Lacaba, Radioactive Sago Project/Lourd de Veyra, and The Brockas/Lav Diaz/Khavn/Roxlee. But even if you’re not a fan of those legends, I hope that post (and others of that kind) at least made you aware of them and their works.

I know not everyone will appreciate or like my posts, especially niche ones. Even Jy asked me why I spend time on something that will barely get views. I think it goes back to why I created this project in the first place. It’s cool when my posts resonate with a large audience, but it’s just a nice bonus. I’m really more focused on documenting “little pieces of the Philippines” I find interesting. In some cases, what I find interesting might be something that a lot of people also find interesting, but there will be times when only a small minority will appreciate the post. That’s totally fine. In a way, I prefer the latter case, because I know I have “put myself in service of that which needs it.”

[🎶Music] Musical Renditions of Jose F. Lacaba’s “For Adults Only” Poem

It’s not surprising that “Lahat Ng Hindi Ko Kailangan Malaman, Natutunan Ko Sa Pelikulang For Adults Only” appeals to multidisciplinary artists. After all, Lacaba himself can be considered as one – being a poet, journalist, editor, screenwriter, translator, among other things.

If I had a peso for every time a genre-defying Filipino band made a musical rendition of that poem, I’d have 2 pesos, which isn’t a lot, but it’s quite cool that it happened twice.

Radioactive Sago Project released their version in 2007 as part of the album Tanginamo Andaming Nagugutom Sa Mundo Fashionista Ka Pa Rin. The Brockas released theirs just earlier this year as a track on their third album, Masaker.

Manila International Book Fair 2025 was more than 3 weeks ago. We went on September 13th, a Saturday which meant the place was packed. It wasn’t the best situation since I had a lot of titles on my to-buy list but we only had less than a couple of hours to find those titles, line up for payment and generally explore the stalls.

We were in a rush because we were going to watch Dear Evan Hansen that same day. We had booked the tickets months prior since Jy is a big fan of the musical. I also learned a day before that VP Sara also watched the show when she was supposed to be attending the OVP Budget deliberations. We were already looking forward to the play but after learning that news, I got even more intrigued because it was apparently worth missing an important commitment for. I guess VP Sara and I have some things in common now:

1. Pareho kaming “isang kaibigan.”

2. We watched Dear Evan Hansen in Manila

3. We would rather do something fun than report to work.

4. We don’t want people to know how we use funds.

But then again I’m not a public official.

Anyway, that was a bit of a long rant to say that I should have scheduled our MIBF visit better. There were a lot of titles I didn’t have time for anymore but I’ll just save them for the next book sale or bookstore visit!

In any case, I wanted to share my Filipiniana haul from MIBF 2025 even if it’s only a handful of titles and this post is already quite late. I’ll always take an opportunity to feature local authors any chance I can.

Manila International Book Fair 2025 Haul

Some notes on why I’m happy to have added these titles to our collection:

1. Killing Time in a Warm Place by Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr. - another addition to our collection of Martial Law-related books. I’ve shared before that we make it a point to collect books relevant to that dark period in our history, so this was an easy decision.

2. Super Panalo Sounds! by Lourd de Veyra - I’m a devout and loyal follower of the Lourd, so I felt that his debut novel is a must-have. I’ve been looking for a copy for years so I’m glad we have this in our library now. I was so excited to read this I finished it quite quickly (I’ll post a review at some point).

3. Pagpag: Poems, Precautions, Meditations, and Other Protestations by Lourd de Veyra - my 3rd Lourd poetry book. This joins my copies of Insectissimo and Marka Demonyo.

4. Responde by Norman Wilwayco - another book I’ve been looking for for years. Norman Wilwayco’s Gerilya is the first novel in Filipino I read that was not a school requirement. I remember reading it when I was in high school and just getting hooked. I’ve also read Migrantik so this was an easy addition. When I bought the book, I noticed the reviews from Lav Diaz, Ronaldo Soledad Vivo Jr., Lourd de Veyra, Eros Atalia, Jun Sabayton, among others. As if I needed more reasons to buy it.

5. The Indio & The Impaler by Wincy Ong - this one’s an addition to our Rizaliana, another category we intentionally curate. This title from Wincy Ong joins the works of Rizal himself, Ambeth Ocampo, Leon Ma. Guerrero, Virgilio Almario, Nick Joaquin, and Noel Villaroman in our collection. Part historical fiction and gothic + colonial horror, with elements of dark comedy and philosophy, it is a unique and creative take on the National Hero.

6. Ang Pag-ibig sa Bayan ni Bonifacio by Virgilio S. Almario - Ambeth Ocampo often states that Rizal wrote a lot for a nation that does not read him. Although not to the same extent, Bonifacio also did write a lot but it’s not talked about enough, so this is a nice addition to the library.

My weekend started early. I took Friday off because I was too unwell to come to the office and do anything productive. So I passed the time by ingesting lots of fluids, taking naps and just watching Netflix and YouTube. Although I knew it was just a flu and nothing more serious, I still didn’t quite like the feeling and hoped it would go away soon. Maybe I was subconsciously hoping for a miracle because for some reason, I thought rewatching Himala was a good idea.

My brain might have been foggy then but I can confirm now that it was a good idea.

[🎬 Film] Himala: A Film on the Cult of Personality and Blind Fanaticism

Himala is one of, if not the most iconic film in Philippine cinema. It is a powerhouse collaboration between three National Artists: Ishmael Bernal, Ricky Lee and Nora Aunor. In my opinion, it should be necessary viewing for anyone studying not just Philippine cinema, but Philippine culture and society more broadly.

Released in 1982 as an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival, where it won most of the awards, including Best Film and Best Actress for Aunor, the film remains relevant today. Its portrayal of blind fanaticism and Filipinos’ obsession with Messianic figures still feels current.

The film revolves around Elsa, a local girl from a town called Cupang, who claims to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary during an eclipse. Word gets around and she soon starts faith healing. Her popularity spreads, drawing flocks to their small town, with people hoping to see her perform miracles.

Himala puts belief at the center of its story. It vividly captures an eerie type of folk Catholicism mixed with herd mentality. Viewers get a sense that devotion is presented not as a divine truth but as a flawed human construct. Faith is not questioned, because doing so risks destroying the social fabric. In Bernal’s Cupang, only outsiders and outcasts dare doubt miracles because in their town, miracles are less about the divine, but more about desperation.

In a town stricken by drought and poverty — believed to be the result of a curse given to them as punishment for driving away a leper years before — people are waiting for a miracle. To give them hope that things will change for the better. To save them from the punishing hellscape they are in. In Elsa, they found someone whom they can project their fears and hopes onto. Someone who can and must finally lift the town’s curse.

The story was inspired by real events that happened in Cabra Island in Lubang, Occidental Mindoro. Several schoolgirls allegedly saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary from the late 60s to early 70s. But that’s not the reason the film feels real and current even today. Its scathing criticism of Philippine society reflects a reality we are all too familiar with. The Philippines, like Cupang, always looks for saviors to idolize, miracles to believe and situations to take advantage of.

A few days ago, in commemoration of Martial Law I shared a reading list related to that dark period in our history. I also shared that my partner Jy and I make a conscious effort in collecting Martial Law-related books to ensure this part of our history is never forgotten. We’re grateful for your recommendations on other books we should add to our home library!

In addition to books, there is plenty of media that now stand as a reminder of Marcos Sr.’s dictatorial rule. Some of you shared or asked for song and movie recommendations. That prompted today’s post and many others in our pipeline.

I will probably share a broader list of Martial law songs and moves, but for now, I wanted to share the story behind a seemingly inconspicuous children’s song.

[🎶 Music] Despite sounding like a children’s song, “Saranggola ni Pepe” subtly references oppression during Martial Law

“Saranggola ni Pepe” is a 1978 song popularized by Celeste Legaspi and written by her husband, Nonoy Gallardo. Originally intended as a children’s lullaby, it is memorable for its cheery melody and instrumentation as well as vivid imagery.

But Legaspi admits, it is more than a children’s song. Its cryptic lyrics actually reference the Martial Law period. As part of TV5 InterAksyon’s Martial Law Memory Project, she shared the background behind her signature song:

“I remember my husband saying, ‘Ano yung New Society?’ There was innocence for us, and ignorance, so that kind of protected us. Okay naman kami, buhay naman kami, may pagkain naman kami so it seemed okay.

“Later on, several months later, we would hear pinick-up si ganito, si ganyan. Parang okay n’ung umpisa, but it was only later on na talagang it became really weird. We were in an ivory tower. Ako, I was in an ivory tower. My husband was in advertising, his job was OK.

“He wrote ‘Saranggola ni Pepe’ with our son’s medyo sira nang ukelele. Hindi ko maintindihan at first, ako mismo. But if you really listen to the lyrics, ayaw namin ‘yung masyadong, ‘Ang bayan ko!”, ‘yung gan’on. Ayaw namin ng gan’on, kasi, our lives are not like that.

“So he wanted to use imagery, a different way of presenting it, na you have to think about it pa and will not really talk about death and persecution, and loss of independence and freedom. We always try to find another way of saying it. That’s the message actually. Mag-isip ka, think about it. And try and get something from it.

“But it was really written during the Martial Law years. And it’s really about his experiences during the Martial Law years.”

It is essentially a story of empathy and artistic protest. Legaspi and Gallardo could have stayed silent – stayed in their “ivory tower.” But they still made the song, which has become a classic and a good reminder of music’s role in raising awareness and inspiring people to take action. In a way, it was their answer to the song’s challenge in the last line: “sumusuway sa utos puso’y sinusunod” (disobeying orders, following the heart).

53 years ago, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. officially announced the declaration of Martial Law. Although Proclamation No. 1081 was signed on 21st September 1972, the announcement was made on live television on the 23rd. He cited the communist threat posed by the then newly-formed Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and the rebellion of the Muslim Independence Movement. This event marked the beginning of a fourteen-year tyrannical regime that stifled dissent and led to large-scale human rights abuses.

Today, I wanted to share with you all our little compilation of books that are relevant to this dark period of our history. These titles are part of our humble Filipiniana library at home. There is plenty of written material on Martial Law. Jy and I want to collect as many as we can, so our future children and family/friends visiting our home can read them anytime. If you have other recommendations, please let me know so I can add them to the long list of titles deserving a space in our shelves.

It is our collective responsibility to remember that time and make sure that history does not repeat itself. Never again, never forget!

Martial Law reads from Halina Filipiniana’s humble library

1. The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos by Primitivo Mijares

   Instead of the synopsis, I wanted to share this post by Former Vice President, current Naga Mayor Leni Robredo about Primitivo Mijares’ disappearance and his son Boyet’s death:

   “Boyet Mijares was the son of Primitivo Mijares, the president of the National Press Club during Marcos’ regime. Primitivo was a close confidant of Marcos, and served as the chief propagandist of the government. Boyet’s father was sent to the United States in 1974, and his disenchantment with the regime began there: Primitivo testified before the US Congress on the human rights violations occurring under Marcos’ rule, and he later wrote “The Conjugal Dictatorship,” a tell-all which exposed the lavish lifestyle the Marcoses lived.

   “This sealed Primitivo’s fate. Little did he know that it would also seal that of his son’s.

   “Boyet was 16 when he received a call form his father, who was lured back to the Philippines from the safety of the United States by Marcos’ men. One day, Boyet asked his mother if he could watch a movie with his friends in Ali Mall, and his mother strictly told him to wait for the car to bring him there. Instead, he asked their maid for 20 Pesos, and said to her, “I’m going to see my daddy today. So I will not wait for mommy. I will just use a bus in going to the place.”

   “The next time they saw Boyet, he was dead. Boyet’s body was riddled with stab wounds, his skull bashed in. His genitals were mangled, and his eyes were protruding. Boyet’s mother, then judge of Manila, was able to obtain information that Primitivo was made to watch while men tortured his son. Primitivo has never been found.”

2. False Nostalgia: The Marcos "Golden Age" Myths and how to Debunk Them by JC Punongbayan

   “This book is going to be perhaps the most lethal weapon in the arsenal against the so-far partially successful attempts (thanks to social media) to tout the 20-year Marcos era (January 1966 to February 1986) as a “golden age” in Philippine history. Specifically, JC Punongbayan relentlessly examines every one of 43 claims that have been made regarding that period—from the faintly ridiculous (that Imelda Marcos did not use public funds to build her “bopis” hospitals) to the utterly insane (that nobody was poor during the Marcos regime). And he debunks every one of them with a mountain of data and past studies, all footnoted, referenced, and acknowledged so anyone can check and see for themselves the accuracy of JC’s rebuttals.    “Jessica Hagedorn’s 1990 debut novel of overlapping narrators and interconnected lives. Set in the Philippines, it is a story of Manila, martial law, and Marcos—the book’s great unnamed dictator. In the ambiguity produced by fictionalization, the novel’s Marcos and First Lady Imelda become symbols of how one despot and his kin may be echoed by the next. With the president’s policies carried out by a “Special Squadron” that includes the ruthless General Nicasio Ledesma, the book captures the undercurrent of violence and death that permeates everyday life under military control. When horrors are daily, weekly, and unceasing, brutality, both in fiction and in fact, becomes almost quotidian.

Despite the physical and psychological violence, the community’s protests continued, leading to the cancellation of the dam project. My girlfriend and I watched Magellan on premiere night, September 10th. Watching a Lav Diaz film is an experience on its own. His work may not be everyone’s cup of tea but you can’t deny his unique artistic vision and approach to filmmaking. If you haven’t seen a Lav Diaz film, you might want to start with this one since Magellan is already one of his shortest and most accessible works!

We watched the film at Edsa Shang. Not one poster or marketing material was in sight. On opening night! The film was screened internationally (Cannes, Sydney, Toronto, New York), and is scheduled for more festivals (Valladolid, London). It’s also our entry to the Oscars Best International Feature Film. But very few people here know about it because you don’t see it getting promoted as much as it should be!

The morning after we watched it, my girlfriend told me she dreamed of the film. The same imagery and story played out in her dream. I thought it was a joke at first, but she said it was true. I told her, “I guess, sobrang haba talaga ng movies ni Lav Diaz. Kahit makatulog ka na, di pa rin tapos.”

[🎬Film] Why You Should Watch Lav Diaz’s Magellan

In the preface of his annotation of Morga’s Events of the Philippine Islands, Rizal wrote, “if the work succeeds in arousing in yourselves the realization of our past, erased from the memory, and in rectifying what has been falsified and slandered, then my efforts shall not have been in vain. With this as a basis, however small it may be, we can all proceed to studying the future.”

I think you should watch Magellan in the same light. In the same way Rizal reclaimed our past from Morga, Diaz retells a story we already know, without the eurocentric bias.

His Magellan is not a hero who brought Spain glory, nor a larger-than-life villain that brave Cebuanos had to defeat. He is a man with his own imperfections who wanted to capitalize on Portugal’s and Spain’s greed. By focusing on him, Diaz parses colonialism from a human perspective, not as an evil that just happened naturally. It also retells the story of Cebuanos initially welcoming him then overcoming him, from the POV of their culture and belief.

You should also watch it for the vivid imagery. It is a cliche to talk about films where every frame is a painting, but Diaz’s shots simply leave you in awe. He utilizes space really well, strategically placing elements on the frame to tell a visual story.

Some viewers might find his signature long sequences frustrating and draggy, but I think they oddly reel you in, making you feel – not just see – the location, often in nature. The long takes with little movement feels more like an immersion. Suddenly you’re no longer watching a movie, but real life unfold on the screen. Characters move and emote the way they would without a camera; events play out on their own time.

Honestly, there are plenty of reasons to watch Magellan. The film being the Philippines’ entry to the 98th Oscars is of the lowest importance.

PS: At 160 minutes, Magellan is already one of his “shortest” and “most accessible” films. The original intention was to cut a 9-10-hour black-and-white film, but Cannes’ 3-hour limit forced him to shorten it. I’m still interested to see that movie, although I might have to do it in installments.

Today September 12th, we wish renowned journalist Kara David a happy birthday!

I’m a big fan of her work. We all know her because of her award-winning documentaries and informative shows. In addition, she’s also a professor, a non-profit founder and triathlete!

But many do not know that she’s a granddaughter of prolific writer and historian Letizia Roxas Constantino. Letizia was known to be especially fond of personal notes and letters, frequently writing to family, friends and colleagues.

We visited the Letizia: A Life in Letters exhibit in the Linangan Gallery of the Constantino Foundation a couple of months ago. A letter from Letizia to Kara on her 23rd birthday was on display. I found it really interesting. It’s a short heartfelt message that shows the relationship between the two.

Last week I posted Joey Ayala’s rendition of “Lupang Hinirang.” A lot of people engaged with it. Many liked it or left positive comments. Others insisted that the national anthem should be respected and only sung the “right way.” The IG post had a poll asking whether artists should be able to perform their own version of the national anthem. Roughly 3,100 people voted with a large majority (~75%) in favor of “Lupang Hinirang” covers.

What I found more interesting were the comments and IG story annotations of people pointing out that Joey Ayala endorsed and still supports Duterte. I was fully aware of the fact — after all, he has lived in Davao for most of his life. Some questioned why I posted him.

This point relates to an often discussed topic – “can you really separate art from the artist?” In my view, you can’t – because art doesn’t exist in a vacuum. But I don’t think this means cancelling personalities with contrarian or even questionable views.

For the record, I am not pro-Duterte. I am glad that he is in ICC custody and will soon be tried for his bloody war on drugs. At the same time, I saw merit in sharing Joey Ayala’s rendition even though he “sadly supports the berdugo,” as one commenter put it.

Just because he stands by Duterte doesn’t diminish the artistry of his national anthem rendition. I think the performance was commendable for its creative take on patriotism.

When I say, the art cannot be separated from the artist, I mean that when we try to appreciate or understand the value of their work, it is absolutely fine to review it in the context of their personal lives. We can say that through his art and music, he’s very nationalistic. At the same time, his political inclination reminds us that one person’s idea of nationalism – what it means to love the country (his “ang magmahal nang dahil sa iyo”) – might differ from another.

Anyway, I don’t mean to bore you with this long intro. Cancel culture is an important and nuanced topic that I likely will have to write about again in the future – especially since I will be posting a lot more Filipino artists/personalities and they’re all imperfect. But before I end this note, allow me to make an example: Spoliarium, housed in the National Museum, is one of the greatest Filipino works of art. Juan Luna is Juan Luna – revered as a great artist and national hero. He also killed his wife and mother-in-law.

My point being, things aren’t always black and white. We cannot separate art from the artist. But we can appreciate art and recognize if an artist killed people or supported killing people. Thinking about it, if our history teachers taught us that our great artists and national heroes sometimes did not-so-great things, maybe we wouldn’t always be looking for saviors.

[🎶Music] Joey Ayala’s illegal act: singing his own version of “Lupang Hinirang”

In case you didn’t know, singing the national anthem “Lupang Hinirang” differently is illegal under Republic Act No. 8491, also known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines. The law states that the national anthem be sung in its proper march tempo in accordance with Julian Felipe’s original musical arrangement. Violating it can result in fines ranging from P5,000 to P20,000 and/or imprisonment for up to one year.

In October 2013, Joey Ayala committed an “illegal act.” He performed his own rendition of the national anthem at TEDxDiliman.

During his talk/performance, he argued that the marching tempo of the song doesn’t reflect our culture, as nonconfrontational people who like slow, swaying music. What started as a creative songwriting exercise became a full-blown re-arrangement of the anthem we all know – edited to remove mispronunciations and completely changing its meter.

But perhaps his boldest decision was changing the iconic last line. From “ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo” – which he argued causes “grave psychological damage” – to a more positive “ang magmamahal nang dahil sa iyo.”

If you ask me, I like both versions for different reasons – the version we know for its historic and cultural significance, Joey Ayala’s version for its creativity. But the broader question is – is it time we update the “Lupang Hinirang” or at least remove clauses of the law penalizing its “wrong” renditions? Is that being enforced anyway?

In case you haven’t been online the past week, “nepo baby shaming” is so hot right now. Netizens are calling out the lavish lifestyles of family members of politicians or businessmen linked to alleged corruption.

The issue blew up after President Marcos Jr.’s directive to do a lifestyle check on all officials after revealing misappropriated funds supposedly for flood control projects.

With Indonesians currently protesting, angered by state violence, lawmakers’ wages, and soaring inflation, we might just be in the midst of a social movement of our own. I hope!

Given these times, I wanted to spotlight two songs that I think are more relevant than ever.

[🎶 Music] Gloc-9’s “Upuan” uses the seat of power as a metaphor for corruption and detachment

16 years after its release, “Upuan” is gaining popularity again. This time, because of netizens referencing it to speak up against alleged corruption in flood control projects.

As a huge Gloc-9 fan, I’m glad this song is being (re)discovered for its powerful lyrics. It uses the seat of power as a metaphor for corruption and detachment. Its creative use of literary devices perfectly captures the persisting class divide. In addition to the “upuan” metaphor, the apostrophe directly addresses the seat’s occupant. First person narration makes it more personal and relatable. Visual imagery illustrates stark differences. No wonder the late National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera also loved the song!

I’m also glad this song is being used in an emerging social movement. To paraphrase Cesar A. Cruz, art should disturb the comfortable. There are plenty of reasons to like “Upuan,” but in today’s context, it’s not hard to imagine it disturbing the comfortable.

Masses, mostly preoccupied with their normal day-to-day, are becoming more socially aware. They’re now calling out lavish lifestyles once seen as aspirational for what they are – gross displays of wealth. Nepo babies and families linked to alleged corruption, while still living in excess now think twice before flaunting their riches.

[🎶 Music] “Tatsulok,” an anthem for protesting injustice in an unequal society

Before Bamboo popularized it in 2007, “Tatsulok” was first performed in 1991 by Buklod (Bukluran ng Musikero para sa Bayan), a folk-rock band composed of Noel Cabangon, Rene Boncocan, and Rom Dongeto.

It was composed in 1989 by Dongeto. Originally inspired by the storming of the Bastille, Dongeto wrote “Tatsulok” after attending the bicentennial celebration of the French revolution. The victory of the French masses inspired him to write what it would take for the Philippines to have an equal society.

A narrator explains to a young man that their current conflict is but a symptom of a larger problem – “habang may tatsulok at sila ang nasa tuktok / 'di matatapos itong gulo.” (As long as the rich stay at the top of the pyramid, this chaos will never end.)

“Hindi pula't dilaw, tunay na magkalaban,” (it’s not Red and Yellow who are at war) alludes to Cory Aquino’s “total-war policy” against the Communist Party of the Philippines-New Peoples Army or CPP-NPA. Now it’s interpreted to mean that the real war is not between political colors.

Nearly 4 decades since its composition and 18 years since Bamboo’s version rose to the charts, the song’s message still rings true to this day. After all, aren’t pyramids built to last?

[🎶 Music] Betamax by Sandwich, a love letter to Philippine music

Betamax doesn’t get enough credit. No, I’m not talking about the Sony video cassette recording format that rivaled VHS – although that was also influential. I’m talking about the popular song by Sandwich!

I’m sure you’ve heard of it. You probably even sing along during the chorus, like many others. Still, I think the song is pretty underrated.

More than its catchy tune, Betamax is a love letter to Philippine music. It pays homage to the influential artists that helped shape OPM. Sandwich itself is an influential band, but it stands on the shoulders of giants. From Pepe Smith to Dead Ends, the song references and honors those giants!

At the same time, the song acknowledges that OPM is a living, evolving thing. “Ipagpatuloy ang daloy ng alon.”

Just as Sandwich emerged, influenced by the icons before them, so will other next wave artists rise and move Philippine music forward. “Padayon!”

Hello fellow Filipiniana fans,

Yesterday was Efren Reyes’ 71st birthday. I’ve been a fan of the 🐐 since I can remember. As a kid, I spent a lot of time on my paternal grandparents’ home where they had a pool table which was mostly used to generate a small income from neighbors who wanted to play. Given that environment, it was impossible not to learn about Efren — people used his name whenever someone hit a trick shot and the TV was often tuned to broadcasts of his matches.

Interestingly, yesterday was also my 29th. It was unfortunate that I didn’t play much pool and didn’t become a good player — it’s a missed opportunity for an epic coincidence. Maybe in an alternate universe, I’m Efren 2.0. Instead, I’m just a regular dude with a day job, writing newsletters for fun.

In any case, I may not be as great as him but it’s cool we share a birthday. I wish him (and me) many more birthdays to come. Although I’m just jealous that even in his 70s, he’s still Bata.

[History] Efren “Bata” Reyes, indisputably the best pool player in the world, celebrated his 71st birthday

Yesterday, August 26, Efren Reyes celebrated his 71st birthday. He was born in Pampanga. He is known by many as “Bata” (kid in Filipino) – a nickname used to distinguish him from an older pool player also named Efren. Or “the Magician” for his uncanny ability to execute seemingly impossible pool shots.

When he was five, he moved to Manila to live with an uncle who owned a small pool hall. He helped clean the hall and had to sleep on the pool tables at night. Exposed to the game early on, he started playing at a young age – not even tall enough to reach the pool table and having to rely on Coca-Cola cases as height boosters.

Today, he has the distinction of being the first player to win world championships in 2 different pool disciplines. He has also won over 100 international pool titles.

As a superstitious man, he’s known to do things he thought increased his chances of winning. Like rubbing ointment on his knees to avoid getting tired, wearing the same clothes he used for prior high-stakes games, and not taking a bath “because it might wash off his luck.”

Many pool players, analysts, and fans regard him as the greatest player of all time. Pool veteran Billy Incardona once said that Efren is “indisputably the best player in the world – especially when you consider all games – he can play any game as well as anyone, maybe better than anyone. In my opinion, we’re watching probably the greatest player in my lifetime and I’ve been watching pool for the better part of forty years.”
